Sandy Hook Chapel

The chapel was built in 1941 to serve the military community at Fort Hancock, on the barrier spit at the northern tip of the Jersey Shore. It sits inside what is now the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area — white clapboard, plain windows, the Atlantic a short walk in one direction and New York Harbor in the other.

For years it was one of the only places in Monmouth County where a couple could have a genuinely historic ceremony with the water that close. Room for about 130 inside, and the grounds could hold several hundred more.

That combination — small, historic, near the water — is what most people are looking for when they find this page. The chapel isn't available. That kind of wedding still is.​​
